Wargame Rules Are More Important Than VIBES
The vibes to a game - the lore, the art, the models, etc. - are important, but they're NOT as important as the rules.

Idk, models that are out of production seem like fair game to me. Its like if theres some obscure video game from the 90s that isnt sold in any official capacity, do I have to find a used copy for $300? Or can I just emulate it? I definitely agree that "models are too expensive" is not a good excuse, and either buying used or supporting a small 3d sculpting/printing business is the way to go there. "Im going to steal this model because it is too expensive" is a bad take because if GW was really taking a hit for their models being too expensive, they could make it cheaper by 1. Paying their workers/contractors less or outsourcing more to shady companies 2. Using lesser quality materials 3. Snubbing the markup for your FLGS or local GW franchisee If GW has to cut corners to make things cheaper, it is going to be at the expense of the people at the bottom or middle of the production process, the execs/shareholders are never going to be the ones taking the hit. Same goes for video games or anything else. You should always ask "who should get paid less to make my toys cheaper" and saying "the people in charge" is not a real answer.

Offering my perspective even though no one asked: I have never really struggled with perfection paralysis. Im not entering any painting comps, im aware im not a great painter and just want my armies to have colour on them and look decent from 3 ft away. But, i do struggle with getting everything done even to my low standards because I have so many projects to work on. I have spent the last 6 months painting almost every day, and honestly, sometimes no movement IS good, because I am getting a little tired of painting so much. Im taking a few weeks off to go play Elden Ring. We cant let painting little dudes take over all of our free time. Its important to have other activities. We need to take more of a steam library approach to our models. Sometimes you pick things up because you thought you wanted it but dont, because it was on a good sale, or because it completes a collection rather than wanting it for its own sake. And thats okay. Just like your steam library, it can sit in a little box awaiting the day you feel like picking it up, and you shouldnt feel bad because you want to buy and paint other models before getting to the one you bought 2 years ago. The good thing is, unlike your steam library, if you really dont want it you can give it to a friend, sell it, or still get enjoyment out of it by playing with an unpainted model, or repurpose it for a kitbash/terrain piece.

Sometimes you want a meal, sometimes you want a snack. For me it depends on where my mood shifts, have I been watching sci-fi? What type, space soldiers fighting aliens or battle fleets. The same with historical, horse and musket or sailing ships (I guess I need some old west stuff too). Thus I look for rules light and/or mini agnostic.

I can only agree wholeheartedly with everything you've said. Myself, I come from a time, when you got a recommendation in a RPG's fanzine to "just pick any miniature you like" to play that RPG with miniatures. The same fanzine suggested proxying miniatures for a DM: Use a robber to represent all kinds of human opponents, use a skeleton to represent all kinds of undead opponents and so on. For starters (with "starters" meaning "starting pretty much at the very beginning of fantasy miniature gaming"), that was enough. So, I learned a craft that's lost today: getting along with what you've got and using imagination. Today, some 1500 or so models later, I have sci fi soldiers, fantasy knights, cowboys, 15mm lawngnomes (I'm not kidding!) and what else. Having this collection I was like "screw it, I want one set of rules I can use to play with all those models and even pit models of different settings versus each other." Thus, I've written my own rules and released them for free. And what's even better: on Facebook I can see other people post photos showing how they are enjoying my rules - and this is the best gift I have ever gotten in my entire life :)

The hobby reached tipping point for gw after 7th edition. Everything has lost its feel, it doesn’t have the same vibe or energy as it did back then. Prices are now genuinely ridiculous and none of the stores even let you play there anymore. When I was in school I’d spend most of my school holidays down the store painting with the staff and playing in Romford. The whole warhammer hobby feels very dead now

I think the only criticism I have is we (the player base) have been asking for consistent balance update with 40k for years due to balance issues and I think frequently changing rules is something that we have accept as part of that request. I think more important is the idea that you mention at the end where perhaps is more about having flexibility to play a variety of games and being open to trying new options. I think the other thing that is important for people to realize is that you can just play old editions of the game if you really want to... there is no reason you have to play with the release rules and index; you don't get new models and such but you also don't have to put up with change if you are playing casually and both players agree to it.

I play to play, win, lose or draw I'll play them all. Grimdark Future is my favorite for me, but I'm still learning to play in 40k. Honestly OPR is a great simplified version of 40k that can sort of kinda with some imagination can give you a feel for 40k, but it's still two totally different systems, but learning curve wise it's easier to start to bend your mind into the great well of different abilities with each squad/hero/army and each of their abilities in a very easy format, that's literally one page and at most a paragraph to explain the rules, but most are 1 or 2 sentences. Anyway the only way to get good at a game is to play if I only have 2 hours I want 4 games, reps people reps, 40k is a drink beer and bullshit game, unless you're doing tournaments, which is awesome IF you have the time. I love them both, the lore is what got me interested in it and after 20 years I finally have a 3k army, but OPR let's me enjoy the most out of it for my time. For now it's quantity and quality, because I play with some amazing people who have been playing for most of their lives, so every game is always a blast. 40k is a blast it's just time consuming.

One thing that GW does have is an active and supported tournament scene. For players who want to get competitive about it that's the dealbreaker, and every WFB or 40K player I have ever met has played in at least one official tournament. So I wonder how much the attachment to the most popular rulesets is driven by this.

I started with AD&D ages ago and have leaned into wargames for the reasons you outlined. The channel "The Joy of Wargaming" has several playlists dedicated to wargame campaigns, largely solo. His series 'You can win at RPGs' is all about using AD&D as a skirmish campaign. He covers other resources as well. Ultimately you can use an RPG to generate a team and have another person generate the opposition and have a very fun narrative campaign. I left the D&D scene, not because of the play acting portion but because I don't like the what the game developed into and it seemed everyone was to interested in talking about the rules rather than playing the scenario (and 2 hours to play out one combat scene). If I can get folks into playing rules light RPGs I would choose Barbarians of Lemuria, Rocket Age or the free Warrior, Rogue and Mage. Just some friendly plugs for what I think are superior roll playing games.

Mordheim is one of those perfect games. You don’t need anything outside of it, and yet the world it takes place in feels infinite. It’s one of the few GW games that can sit on a shelf with other classic games like Chess, Settlers of Catan, Star Wars X-Wing, and would be just as good 25 years from now as it has been the last 25.

I'm a big fan of Kings of War. The lore itself is fine, but I chose to ignore it and think of something up myself when I started. And by golly, did my imagination get LIT ON FIRE. I've often looked at the rules and went, "This is good lore here, but what else can these rules represent?" Or more often, "these models look sweet! What force can I put them in that makes sense?" Or sometimes a modeling or kitbashing idea to try. For example: My magma men are mostly stormcast eternal minis with fire sculpted where their heads should be, while using the riftforged orcs list for stats. It's a blast.

"Every game is miniature agnostic, as soon as you stop falling for the corporation hype hoax." Seriously, that's why D&D is such a let down for Hasbro, it just cannot be monetized the way Magic is. Because what do we need: Paper, pencil, dice.

That's why I stay with rulesets like Warmachine and Kings of War. Especially from a competetive view. Open for new rule experiences but GW rule set is sth I don't like (WHFB 8th, TOA, 40k since 7th and AoS). Still the new 40k core rules are good. The army rules still aren't near my sweet spot.

  • @PatrikStandar

GW should stay away from old games like Epic, Mordheim and Warmaster. The fans have made the games better over the years than GW could ever do.

  • @stephenphilp8222

Games Workshop started the 'you need to use our minis for our rules' nonsense back in the '80s. It's a SciFi and Fantasy thing. It doesn't work in Historicals for obvious reasons. I might buy 2 or 3 rulesets for the period I'm interested in to find a set I like and use miniatures from a number of manufacturers to build my armies. This is good for the hobby and the competition keeps the prices reasonable. Thankfully the proprietary business model spouted by GW (that enables price fixing) is starting to wane as more 3d designers come online and alternative rulesets appear. This can only be good for the hobby - democratisation is always welcome. The alternative rulesets are usually more accessible than GW in my experience, and have an excellent community to back them up. Long may it continue.

Real late to the discussion: I think folks too often confuse an indie dev and indie publisher when discussing "is it indie." Osprey Miniature Games are usually Indie Devs instead of in house work. Afaik Mike can take Gaslands to another company if needed, and has published content with Electi's Blaster for it previously. The Weasel games are in the same boat with Modiphious of Indie Dev/ Non-Indie Pub. Seperately there are indie publishers, like Space Penguin Ink or, arguably, Exalted Funeral, who are just a handful of people publishing cool things regardless of sales metrics. A believe the IP note doesn't work every time as River Horse Games was just Alessio Cavatore before merging w/ Mantic.

A company making the minis shouldnt be the one to Balance them as well. It s like to ask the frog how great his lake should be. („Oh noone buys this mini?! Boost it!“ „what? They can play competative with their old minis alone?! Nerf them! ..better: put them in legendary and dont demand to let the old minis be used as legal proxy!“) We like that game ; but with 10th we started to make more own rules. Some day the community will have their own good balancing (i dont mean opr..that is too flat as it is now^^) I dunno, it just seems they sometimes want to change the meta and ask different teams what to do (one says: change pts cost, the next: change some rules that they aswell synergize, the third: change specific rules or delete parts of mechanics this unit used to be strong…and instead of saying „we take option xy“ they take them all… its like a broken doorhandle, but instead of“ fixing it“ they also „buy and change a complete new door“ AND „building a new room“ at the same time
